In 1997 the site was chosen to create a Millennium Green, completed in 2000 with much of the work carried out by volunteers.
The 3.7 acres are planted with approximately 300 native trees and bushes, with a grass meadow of native wildflowers. The Green provides diverse habitat for wildlife.
Within the Green a large mosaic, centered on the tree of life and created by local people, depicts the four seasons, local wildlife and buildings of note in the town.
With open pedestrian access, the Green provides an oasis for resident and visitors alike.
Local residents hold the Green in trust as a charity.
